QUESTION 1

Joe Soap operates a bakery in Durban. Because of the excellent product the bakery produces and its excellent location, demand has increased by 45 % over the previous year. On many occasions, customers were not able to purchase the bread of their choice. Because of the size of the store, no new ovens can be added. At a staff meeting, one employee suggested ways to load the ovens differently so that more loaves of bread can be baked at one time. This new process will improve productivity by 12 % and will require more workers. If they made 2000 loaves of bread the same time last year at a productivity of 2.5 loaves per labour hour, how many more workers will be required? Each worker works 160 hours per month. (10)
