The empirical study I have chosen is titled, “Teaching science through the language of students in technology – enhanced instruction” by Ryoo (2015). This research is aligned with my topic of interest which is regarding English language learners use of technology for education. To explain what it means to align research, I believe it is to keep your research pertinent to your topic. The Merriam-Webster dictionary explains it as, “to arrange things so that they form a line or are in proper position: to change (something) so that it agrees with or matches something else: to join a group that is supporting or opposing something.

The key concept of this article is to see if using students first language in web based learning improves students’ science learning by offering a linguistically heterogeneous classroom. The study was done to compare ELL and non- ELL students learning of science, and to determine if ELL students learned more using both English as well as their first language or just using English-full immersion. A total of 220 fifth grade English Language Learners and their non-ELL peers. The researchers conclude that there is a potential advantage of using students everyday English as a resource to make science more accessible to linguistically diverse students in mainstream classrooms. They also concluded that by integrating students’ everyday language into science instruction, they believe it is possible for all students including ELLs to acquire both the content and language of science. It is important to keep this article in mind because it supports using technology for translating and comprehension for ELLs in the study of science and how utilizing the translation it makes science more comprehensible and accessible for ELL students.
