Essay 3: Texts-in-Context

For this essay, you will read several essays by a single writer and identify patterns that appear across the range of those essays. Once you analyze those patterns and identify some potential significance about those patterns, you will conduct research to offer some new insight into the ideas of your chosen author. Research may be into a pre-existing critical conversation about the author; into a particular idea or theory put forth by the writer; or into some other appropriate context. By synthesizing this researched context with your own nuanced thinking, you will develop an argumentative essay that reflects curiosity, concession, and elasticity of thought.

Requirements: 6-8 pages; MLA Citation (in-text and Works Cited page); 3-4 primary sources (from a single author); 1-2 ancillary sources (from research).

Skills Practiced:

· Discovering through the analysis and interpretation of texts the way a given writer thinks.

· Identifying the principles and values embedded within a given text.

· Analyzing, selecting, organizing, and incorporating evidence from a number of written, primary texts by a single writer.

· Carefully and ethically selecting and engaging with scholarly and critical sources.

· Using library resources to locate appropriate sources in order to contextualize your interpretation.

· Crafting an argument to create a dynamic academic essay.
