Assessment Item 2: Case Study: Professional Practice

Due date: Friday 27 May 2016

Length: 3000 words

Learning objectives: 1, 2, 3, 4

Completion of this assignment requires you to submit three individual tasks. Each task is designed to introduce you to career development and the construction of careers.

Select two case studies from those posted onto the Blackboard by another student in Assignment 1. Consider how you may approach career development work with that client in a socially just and ethical way by completing the following tasks.

Task 1: Reflection (900 words)

Describe in 900 words what socially just and ethical practice means to you. In your reflection, include descriptions of social justice and ethics. Explain the relevance of social justice to career development work throughout its history and consider its place in today’s world of work. Explain the importance of ethical practice and consider some of the dilemmas career development practitioners could face. Describe the location in which you do or could work (e.g., workplace, geographic location, labour market trends) and also the client group with whom you do or could work. Outline some of the issues you may need to consider in order to practice in a socially just and ethical manner. Include reference to relevant literature.

Task 2: Labour market analysis (2000 words)

a) Select two different case studies posted on the blackboard in Assignment 1 Task 2e. Assume that these potential clients live in your local area and intend to return to work or further learning (e.g., university, TAFE, informal learning). Identify and critique three sources of labour market or career information that could be used by these potential clients. Consider this information from the perspective of the clients themselves and also from your perspective as a career development practitioner. (500 words)

b) Conduct a labour market analysis in your local area related to the needs of each client. What opportunities are available in your local area for learning and education? What would you take into account in relation to the return to work or further learning plans of the clients from the two case studies you have selected? (500 words)

c) On the basis of the background information you have on each client, the local labour market, and learning and education opportunities, for each client outline a possible career development intervention (e.g., counselling /resource/program/learning strategy) that you believe may provide a socially just and ethical response to their needs. Provide a rationale for the interventions you outlined. (1000 words)

Task 3: Mission Statement (200 words)

Develop a mission statement for your practice as a career development practitioner. It should contain a brief overall statement about your work and at least 5 key points about the type and quality of service you deliver.
